Bakersfield Earthquake 2023

Quakes rattle California as magnitude-5.3 earthquake strikes San Joaquin Valley

Magnitude-3.5 and -5.2 quakes also reported near Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA (KGET) - A series of earthquakes has rattled California in recent days, including a magnitude-5.3 temblor that struck the San Joaquin Valley late Tuesday night.

The quake, which occurred at 11:28 p.m. Tuesday, was centered about 18 miles east-southeast of San Juan Bautista, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was the largest of a series of earthquakes that have hit the area in recent days, including a magnitude-3.5 quake that struck about 22 miles east-southeast of Bakersfield on Monday morning and a magnitude-5.2 quake that struck about 18 miles west-northwest of Bakersfield on Tuesday morning.

The quakes have caused some damage, including cracked walls and broken windows, but no serious injuries have been reported.

Geologists say the quakes are likely related to the San Andreas Fault, which runs through California. The fault is a major source of earthquakes, and it is capable of producing large, damaging quakes.

Residents of the San Joaquin Valley are urged to be prepared for the possibility of more earthquakes.
