Norway Women's Beach Handball Team Defies Bikini Mandate

Shorts over Bikinis

European Championships Controversy

The Norway women's beach handball team made headlines recently when they opted to wear shorts instead of bikini bottoms at the European Championships. The team's choice sparked controversy, as the International Handball Federation (IHF) requires female players to wear bikini bottoms with a side width of no less than 10 centimeters.

The Norwegian team argued that they felt uncomfortable and objectified wearing bikinis, which they found to be too revealing and impractical for the sport. "This is about something much bigger than just shorts. It's about all the women and girls who play beach handball and who deserve to feel comfortable and confident in their uniforms," said captain Katrine Lunde.

The IHF has since fined the Norwegian team 150 euros per player for violating the uniform regulations. However, the team has stated that they will continue to wear shorts and that they are prepared to pay any future fines.

The team's decision has sparked a wider debate about the objectification of female athletes and the need for more inclusive and empowering sports uniforms.
