Newcastle Looking For Future No1 Goalkeeper To Replace Pope

Newcastle looking for future no.1 goalkeeper to replace Pope

Ambitious Magpies eye summer swoop ahead of goalkeeper's expected departure

Newcastle United are reportedly on the lookout for a new goalkeeper this summer, with Nick Pope expected to leave the club.

The Magpies are said to be targeting a number of potential replacements, including Borussia Monchengladbach's Yann Sommer and Udinese's Marco Silvestri.

Pope, who has been Newcastle's first-choice goalkeeper since joining from Burnley in 2016, is out of contract at the end of next season and is expected to seek a move away from St James' Park.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs in the Premier League and abroad, including Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid.

Newcastle are keen to avoid losing Pope on a free transfer and are therefore looking to sell him this summer.

The Magpies are said to be willing to listen to offers in the region of £20 million for the England international.

Sommer, 34, has been a key player for Borussia Monchengladbach for the past eight seasons, making over 300 appearances for the Bundesliga club.

He has also been capped 80 times by Switzerland and was part of the squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

Silvestri, 31, has been with Udinese since 2017 and has made over 200 appearances for the Serie A club.

He has also been capped three times by Italy and was part of the squad that won the 2020 European Championship.

Newcastle are likely to face competition from other clubs for the services of Sommer and Silvestri, but they are confident of securing a deal for one of the two goalkeepers.

The Magpies are also said to be interested in signing a young goalkeeper to provide competition for Pope's replacement.

They have been linked with a move for Manchester United's Dean Henderson, who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest.

Henderson, 26, has been capped once by England and is seen as a potential long-term replacement for Pope.

Newcastle are expected to make a decision on their goalkeeping targets in the coming weeks.

They are keen to have a new goalkeeper in place before the start of the 2023/24 season.
